X-Posted from H-NET List for African Expressive Culture <H-AFRARTS@H-NET.MSU.EDU> From: Michael Conner <mwconner1@COMCAST.NET> ________ From: Christa Clarke <firstname.lastname@example.org> Date: May 4, 2010 Contemporary Art in a Transnational Age: A Conversation with Bisi Silva May 7, 2010 7 - 8 p.m. (Reception begins at 6 p.m.) Newark Museum, Newark, NJ (Free. Pre-registration required, call 973-596-6550. See www.newarkmuseum.org for more information.) Bisi Silva, the founder and director of the Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) in Lagos, Nigeria, talks about new forms of exhibitions, the importance of cultural exchange, and artists to watch. The program concludes with a dialogue between Silva and curator Christa Clarke on contemporary art and the role of the curator in a transnational age. This program is presented in conjunction with "Present Tense: Arts of Contemporary Africa," the Newark Museum's newly opened gallery, showcasing works from the museum's permanent collection. Highlighting art of the present day, the inaugural installation features works by nine artists with wide-ranging approaches to art-making as well as equally varied subject matter and sources of inspiration. The program is part of a touring conversation series with Bisi Silva organized by ICI (Independent Curators International), New York and has been made possible by Agnes Gund, with additional support by the ICI Sponsors, Patrons, Partners and Benefactors.
