(Posted by Ray Stephens) Date: Sat, 18 Oct 2008 13:23:37 -0500 From: "Miller, Mike" <Mike.Miller@ci.austin.tx.us> Subject: RE: State and County Fairs and Expositions The Capital State Fair was held in Austin 1875-1884 on the Fairgrounds in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin. For a good overview of the fair, see chapter 1 of "Austin's Hyde Park" by Sarah and Thad Sitton (Pecan Press, 1991). Information about this fair can also be found in Frank Brown's "Annals of Travis County." If you want more about this fair, the Austin History Center has a number of resources with information about the fair and the Capital Fair Association: -"Austin File Chronological" - this was a WPA project containing excerpts and summaries of news events in Austin -A vertical file on the Fair - a hodgepodge of stuff, includings some letters, certificates, and a site map as well as clippings. -Papers of E. C. Bartholomew, who was secretary for the Capital Fair Association. His diary in particular has a lot of observations about the fair -2 exhibit catalogs (1878 and 1884). The 1878 catalog does not mention any furniture exhibition, but the 1884 does. Both catalogs include lists of other fairs held around the state that year. I hope this is helpful. Michael C.
