One hardly needs to compare Sherman's march to the the Thirty Years' War to have it look "more benign and familiar," as Kenneth W. Noe put it. Just compare it to any of our campaigns against Native Americans, such as that by Sullivan in NY state during the Revolution. Sherman's march hardly deserves censure. -- James W.
