The Mall: As I read the long headnote by J P Boyd (the last work he did) on Jefferson, L'Enfant and the plans for the capital city, neither man explicitly used the term The Mall. Jefferson referred to 'public walks', and Boyd sees therein "the germinal idea of The Mall", but in the first instance it issued as L'Enfant's 'Grand Avenue'. Nor can I find a date for the term The Mall given in John Reps's book. Was it with A J Downing's landscaping plans of 1850? NB, too, from Reps reference to a visiting Englishman referring to the New Orleans levee as a mall (ie public walk) in 1796-7; and from Whitehill references to The Mall running alongside Boston Common (the work of Bulfinch?)
