Dear John,

When I left Moscow in mid-October, the reading room of GARF was open,
but had
temporarily moved to the "aktovyi zal" at another "pod''ezd" of the
archival
complex.
The opening hours were 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Thursday and 10 am to 4
pm on
Fridays. There are also certain restrictions concerning the number of
"dela"
and "opisi" you are allowed to order per day.
I was told that the main reading room is expected to reopen by the end
of the
year.
There might presently be some problems with getting photocopies, because
the
lady responsible for making them resigned in summer and they did not yet
have a
replacement.
Besides that GARF's telephone has changed as well. The administration's
new
telephone number should be: (495) 580-87-41.
