Dear List Members, I recently ordered several hundred pages of photocopies at the State Archive of Novosibirsk Oblast' (GANO) relating to my dissertation on the Gulag in Western Siberia. The archivists told me that this would not be a problem, and indeed they completed my first order. However, they will not give me the photocopies from this order, nor will they complete my other orders. From what I can gather, the problem is that the MVD in Moscow does not want me leaving the country with these documents. All documents I have been working with are de-classified and are available in the general reading room. The archivists at GANO were apparently quite surprised by this problem, and the Russian Archive is in negotiation (or so I've been told) with the MVD to try to resolve the issue. Has anyone else on this list encountered a similar problem? Does anyone have any advice? I leave Novosibirsk for Moscow on Sunday, so personally this is a matter of some urgency. In any case, I wanted to warn list members of this potential problem. All the best, Wilson Bell ---- Wilson T. Bell [wilson.bell@utoronto.ca] Department of History University of Toronto
