Maurice Shainberg's "Breaking from the KGB" (New York, 1986) lists the Soviet officers involved in the Katyn Forest massacres. The list (pp. 180-81) begins with Colonel Grigorii Zaitsev, whom Beria assigned to dispose of the Polish officers, on direct orders from Stalin. Shainberg names at least fifteen other Soviet officers (lieutenant colonels, majors, captains, first lieutenants) who were involved in the massacre. Marta Olynyk
