--------------------------------------------------------- lnSEA invites the world to New York in 2002 for 'International Conversations Through Art' lnSEA will hold its 31st World Congress in New York, from August 19 to August 24, 2002. The 31 st InSEA World Congress New York hosts are: USSEA - the United States Society for Education through Art (NAEA affiliate), Teachers College Columbia University, New York City Board of Education, and The New York Foundation for The Arts. The Congress venue is the Marriott World Center Hotel in New York. The World Congress is dedicated to realizing UNESCO's promise of international understanding by Education through Art. The congress will provide forums and exhibitions for the celebration of a diversity of approaches and multiplicity of voices in art education, secured in their cultural history and open worldview. The World Congress is an opportunity to meet art educators from around the world, particularly from countries that usually do not get onto to the center-stage in world forums. The main theme of the Congress is: International Conversations through Art, which acknowledges the mission of InSEA; to represent art educators throughout the word. The purpose is to give voice to nations' visions of art education as a way to help understand cultural identity. These conversations will explore a variety of themes in art education that highlight regional characteristics and offer the opportunity for dialogue across boundaries. The two particular components of the program - The Keynote Panels, and The invited Seminars will seek out and invite philosophers, artists, art educators and scholars of culture to address the congress sub-themes: re-imagining Traditions, re-Thinking Aesthetics, re-Making Minds, and re-Viewing Media and Meanings. The Congress will provide for over hundred and twenty papers, presentations and workshops to be given by lnSEA members. Presenters and participants are requested to pay attention to the congress sub-themes as guidelines when preparing proposals for these presentations. A two-day Research conference, preceding the main congress will be held at Teachers College Columbia University, New York. The research conference will explore the theme: re-Searching the Art of lnquiry. Research presenters respond to research issues related to the congress themes and the wider art education charter of lnSEA. A call for papers for both the World Congress and the Research Congress will be issued in a December 2000 mailing along with other particulars on registration and accommodations. Exhibitions The Congress also projects an ambitious exhibition program with two featured events: 'Art Teaches' These invited, especially prepared and mounted exhibitions from the around the world will present particular cultural and community perspectives on art education. The aim is to profile practice of art teaching and art, made by people of all ages from different countries. These exhibitions will be presented around New York City at various museums, schools and community centres. 'Arts in New York City Schools -The Project Arts' Exhibitions will focus on the renaissance in arts education underway in the New York City Public Schools. Many have talked about New York as "the world". New York City school students come from virtually every country on the earth and speak more than 100 different languages. The Project Arts exhibitions - will highlight the artwork of children reflecting the impact arts have on the cultural dynamics of the city and in its classrooms.
