Subj: Academy Faux Pas Date: 96-06-05 07:37:50 EDT From: PrendEC@hqda.army.mil (Prendergast, Eloise C.) To: H-MINERVA@h-net.msu.edu ('MINERVA') The more I read stuff like this the more thankful I am that I went AROTC. This is getting ridiculous. And if this is what it means to belong to Academies I'm less and less impressed by them. Midshipman 1st Class Naomi Jackson said she forgot about the dinner, but her roommate reported that she lied after overhearing her tell someone on the phone that she planned to skip the dinner to study. Jackson, of Bedford, N.Y., was the first of four female midshipmen to accuse Midshipman 1st Class Scott T. Ward, of Grand Rapids, Mich., of making unwanted sexual advances and assaulting them. He was the third-highest ranking midshipman at the time. Ward, who remains in custody in Washington, has denied any wrongdoing. Jackson was convicted of lying to her roommate after skipping the dinner on May 1, the same day she and the other women testified against Ward in the Navy equivalent of a grand jury hearing in Washington. On Friday, Capt. William T.R. Bogle, commandant of the corps of midshipmen, upheld that conviction and recommended she be expelled. The case must still be reviewed by the academy's superintendent, Adm. Charles Larson, and the Secretary of the Navy John Dalton. Jackson declined to discuss the case Sunday. Academy spokesman Noel Milan would not comment. The charges against Ward came amid a series of embarrassing criminal and administrative cases that have plagued the academy in the last year. ==============================
