Palmer Raids

A quick search on Google for both author and article title ("The Great
Red Scare," American Heritage, 1968) didn't turn up anything specific.
However, the response from Mr. Kenyon was very helpful, as was an
off-line suggestion that I check into Stanley Coben's biography of
Palmer, _A. Mitchell Palmer: Politician_, Columbia University Press,
1963. I plan to check out the book later this week, but found a couple
of reviews on JSTOR that said Coben's thesis was that Palmer was neither
a Progressive liberal or an all-encompassing hater of Communists --
rather he was a practitioner of realpolitik throughout his career,
bending and shaping his public responses as necessary to rise through
the ranks of public office. His ultimate goal, never achieved, was
president of the US. Coben's book is the sole biography written about
the man. Revisionism, anyone?
