Date: October 22, 1999

[We received numerous posts regarding the upcoming Wehrmacht exhibition. Just a reminder, readers can search the logs of past discussions on the subject from the H-German home page at www.h-net.msu.edu/~german/ - ed.]

1.
Submitted by: Jorg Bottger
bottgerholstein@YAHOO.COM

I think that the Ostpreussenblatt cannot be considered an authoritative source in this regard. Be it as it may, members of H-German might want to consult the following three scholarly articles in respectable journals that have just appeared (or forthcoming):

Bogdan Musial, "Bilder einer Ausstellung: Kritische Anmerkungen zur Wanderausstellung 'Vernichtungskrieg. Verbrechen der Wehrmacht 1941-1944', _Vierteljahreshefte fuer Zeitgeschichte_ 47(1999);

Krisztian Ungvary, "Echte Bilder - problematische Aussagen: Eine quantitative und qualitative Analyse des Bildmaterials der Ausstellung 'Vernichtungskrieg - Verbrechen der Wehrmacht 1941-1944", _Geschichte in Wissenschaft und Unterricht_ 50(1999): 584-595;

Dieter Schmidt-Neuhaus, "Die Tarnopol-Stellwand der Wanderausstellung 'Vernichtungskrieg - Verbrechen der Wehrmacht 1941-1944': Eine Falluntersuchung zur Verwendung von Bildquellen", _Geschichte in Wissenscaft und Unterricht_ 50(1999): 596-603.

Based on these articles we will perhaps enter another discussion round when the Wehrmacht exhibit arrives in NYC in early December. By the way, the Feuilleton/Kultur sections of the major German newspapers are currently buzzing with coverage of the renewed controversy surrounding the Wehrmachtsausstellung.

Cheers,
Jorg Bottger
Independent Scholar

2.
Submitted by: Eric Weitz
weitz004@maroon.tc.umn.edu

I am not in a position to judge the veracity of the photographs in the Wehrmacht exhibition. But I continue to marvel at people who claim that the victims of Stalinism (or "the 25 million innocents butchered by Lenin and Stalin" as Thomas Reimer puts it) have been ignored. There exists a rather extensive historiography and countless novels and memoirs on the worst aspects of the Soviet dictatorship. And if we are going to pursue comparisons of the two major forms of twentieth-century European dictatorships, let's do so in a serious manner, not through comparative victim counts.

Eric D. Weitz
University of Minnesota

3.
Submitted by: Geoffrey Megargee
megargeeg@NSSG.NCR.GOV

Thomas Reimer is fully correct on all but one point: the exhibition is definitely worth seeing. I saw it in Freiburg and found it fascinating, as much for its flaws as for any strengths it has. But beyond any personal interest, as historians we have to confront works that clearly do not meet
an acceptable professional standard. Go to the exhibition. Start a discussion with other people there. Point out the inaccuracies. Make them aware of the debates. We gain nothing if we sit back, purse our lips, and let the uninformed public absorb the kind of distorted view that the exhibition presents.

Geoffrey Megargee

4.
Submitted by: Ursula Duba
duba@nai.net

Following is an excerpt of an article in the Frankfurter Rundschau which should put to rest any concerns that the organiziers of the upcoming exhibit about the conduct of the German Wehrmacht during WWII at Cooper Union are not concerned about historical accuracy.

The entire article can be read at http://www.fr-aktuel= l.de/fr/102/t102007.htm (probably only today for free)

"Die Macher der Wehrmachtsausstellung haben Fehler bei der Beschreibung von Bildern der Dokumentation eingeraeumt. Sie kuendigten am Mittwoch Korrekturen an. Zuvor hatte ihnen der polnische Historiker Bogdan Musial vorgeworfen, Verbrechen des sowjetischen NKWD als Taten deutscher Soldaten auszugeben."

ursula duba
