Submitted by: Eric Weitz weitz@zzf-pdm.de Dear Colleagues, I have no position one way or another on the formation of the Historical Society. But having served on the AHA Program Committee for the 1998 meeting, I do feel compelled to respond to Christopher R. Jackson's blanket condemnation. Comments like his are voiced continually. One hears them in the corridors at the meetings, members of the Committee, and especially the chairs, get letters of complaint. But at least in my limited experience, every single member of the Committee was committed to forming a program that reflected the diversity of topics and themes about which historians research, write, and teach. I don't have the program with me, but I know there were sessions on military history, as there were on "conventional" political and diplomatic history. It is simply not true that the program conforms to any particular perspective. If there are constraints on the Committee, they are those produced by the kind and quality of submissions it receives. Sincerely, Eric Weitz z.Zt.: Zentrum fuer Zeithistorische Forschung Am Kanal 4/4a 14467 Potsdam weitz@zzf-pdm.de
