In addition to the sources already mentioned, I would suggest two volumes
of very memoirs by a former HJ leader:
Heck, Alfons, 1928- The burden of Hitler's legacy / Frederick,
CO : Renaissance House Publishers, c1988. 266, [3] p. : ill. ; 23 cm.
Heck, Alfons, 1928- A child of Hitler : Germany in the days when
God wore a swastika / Frederick, CO : Renaissance House, c1985.
Heck writes these books as a kind of penance for having been a true
believer in his youth. He builds a great deal of background into his
narrative. He was from the Mosel valley, and his real HJ military
experience comes from work building and defending the Westwall. He
actually deals with the war period in some detail in both volumes, as I
recall. For your project, they are probably worth a look.
