I am a graduate student currently doing research for my master's thesis.
My tentative topic is the role of the Swabian Hitler Youth in defensive
military actions leading up to the end of World War II. I am trying to
examine how the local HJ bureaucracy facilitated (or failed to facilitate)
the mobilization of last ditch attempts to defend the German homeland from
the advancing allied armies.
I have several rolls of microfilm from the National Archives in Washington
D.C. which I am currently sifting through for primary documentary
evidence to support my thesis. However, I have had a difficult time
locating secondary source material on HJ organizational structures and
general history during the period 1939-45. Most of the material I have
found deals with the Hitler Youth during the Kampfzeit, prior to the Nazi
takeover of the German government.
I would appreciate any information about secondary source material dealing
with the HJ during the war, or any good bibliographies which might be helpful
in identifying such sources. Furthermore, any autobiographical accounts of
HJ members, especially in southern Germany would also be of help.
Thanks,
Mark E. Eberhardt
