Submitted by: Alf Luedtke <Luedtke@mpi-g.gwdg.de> TIMING AND FURTHER STEPS RE: MPIG GOETTINGEN Contrary to the thrust of the report of the Sueddeutsche Zeitung of Nov. 26 the Senat of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft will decide only on Mar 7, 1997 on the *proposal* to close, among other Institutes, also the MPIG in Goettingen. On Nov. 22 the Senat approved the plan of President Markl, but in *general terms* (closings necessary but still open as to which Institutes). At the same time, this board demanded further deliberation and due process. Most important in this "due process" will now be the role the "Geisteswissen- schaftliche Sektion" performs (The Sektion also comprises of the MPIG). On Nov 22, the Senat demanded of the Sektion to investigate "any possible alternative". Also, the rules of the MPG demand a due process, for instance proper deliberation (including a special commission on the case; that commission does not yet exist...). As to alternatives: The "Frankfurter Rundschau" of Dec. 3 carries an interview with Prof. Dr. Dieter Simon, Director of the MPI f. europaeische Rechtsgeschichte, Frankfurt (member of the "Geisteswiss. Sektion"), and President of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wiss. He comes out by finding Markl's proposal to close the MPIG Goettingen "eine unbedachte Handlung". Markl's argument that history is done by hundreds of university professors and does not need another and special Institute would apply to the same extent to the six Institutes of Law bwith the MPG (also members of the Geisteswiss. Sektion); thus, if it comes to closings one ought to consider also these. -- The Sektion will meet on Febr. 6/7. 1997. Given this timing we feel that *further statements* are very much needed, esp from clolleagues abroad. They should arrive by *Jan. 15, 1997*. Colleagues who want to write but haven't done so until now are kindly requested to send copies of their letters to Praesident Markl and also to the Chairman of the Sektion, Prof. Eser (address below). (I'd like to note that all letters and statements which arrived here by Nov 12 have been sent cc to Prof. Eser). Beyond leaning on the decision-makers of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft it now becomes especially important to stimulate broader political intervention. Letters to the Federal President and, simultaneously, to the respective German Ambassador, would serve this purpose. Those who wrote before mid-November did a great job, we feel. They not only helped the MPIG and historical research in Germany but, more importantly, the international networks of and activities in both humanities and cultural studies. Still we would like to ask them to consider sending a *second letter* either to the Federal President or to the German Ambassador or to both. Again, the people at the Institute would be very grateful for copies of these resp. letters !
