A number of us at the University of Michigan are organizing a campaign of
protest against the possible closing of the Max Planck Institut fuer
Geschichte in Goettingen. Based on our contact with Alf Luedtke of the
MPI, the historians there seem to think that letters from institutions,
centers, university presidents, department chairs, etc. will be more
effective than a mass campaign of individual letters. So we are
requesting that our deans, institute directors, department chair, etc.
write a letter and are gathering signatures on one letter that we will
send collectively. Although this closure is to take effect with the
retirement of the current directors in eight years, the decision will be
discussed once again on November 22nd. Those of us who wish to write or
have our chairs, etc. write can direct letters to:
Prof. Dr. Hubert Markl
Praesident der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft
Postfach 101062
D-80084 Muenchen
FAX 011-49-89-21081111
Our colleagues in Goettingen are most grateful for the support.
