Submitted by: Marion Gray <mgray@ksu.edu> According to an article in the Neue Zuercher Zeitung from 25 October 1996, the President of the Max Planck Gesellschaft is recommending the closing of the Max Planck Institut fuer Geschichte in Goettingen. This recommendation is based on financial considerations, and at least three other Max Planck institutes in other disciplines are also on the list for closing. The Senate will act on this proposal on 22 November and could choose to reject it. As many historians of Germany know, this institute was founded in 1956 by Hermann Heimpel and has been one of the most important research sites in Germany since then. It has produced path-breaking scholarship and has served as a connection between the historical profession in Germany and scholars across the world. I am shocked and saddened to read this news. Even if the Senate rejects the recommendation, I find it unsettling to know that such a proposal could be seriously considered. I have always admired what I considered Germany's strong commitment to humanities scholarship. Was it not so strong after all? ============================== Marion W.
