Submitted by: Michael Kater <mkater@yorku.ca> There is a growing literature on this topic. Short of anwering all those detailed questions here, I can give you list of a number of important books to start with. The most important might be Gisela Bock's classic study on the sterilization of women in Nazi Germany, in German, with an obvious title, if you look into a major university catalog. Then there is the recent and excellent background study by Atina Grossmann, in English, Oxford Press, also obvious title. It takes you back to Weimar and then beyond. Two other books that recently appeared are also very good, treating the general eugenic and sterilization background and taking you close to selection on the ramp (the final eugenic step). These are books in English by Henry Friedlander (Religious Studies, CUNY), UNC Press, and Michael Burleigh, Cambridge UP. You should also check out "background" studies by Paul Weindling (a book with many pages, Cambridge UP some years ago), Sheila Faith Weiss (Calif. UP), and Robert Proctor (Harvard Press). My own book on doctors under Hitler (UNC Press 1989) has a whole chapter on women doctors and their attitude to health and politics you might find helpful. And look into the bibliographies/footnotes of those books for more info. Sorry I could not go into any details with the titles but I am terribly busy correcting page proofs. Best of luck! Michael H.
