There are a number of avant-garde films which are worth looking at in relation to the immigration and exile topic. Alan Berliner's "Intimate Stranger," available from the Museum of Modern Art, is one of the most extraordinary films of the last few years. It explores Berliner's uncle's transnational identity and his movements through Egypt, Japan, and America. Many of Jonas Mekas' films reflect his consciousness as a displaced Lithuanian in America, and "Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania" would be the best pick from among his works. Trinh Minh-ha's "Surname Viet Given Name Nam" looks at Vietnamese women in America. Meredith Monk's "Ellis Island" is also terrific.
