There is a large body of work in the Malayalam (Kerala, South India) language about emigration and exile, since many thousands of Malayalis live outside of Kerala (there's even a film that translates "A Malayali Outside Kerala"). Some titles I can think of offhand are: AALKOOTTATHIL THANIYE (alone in the crowd; I.V. Sasi 1984) The antihero takes his fiancee's dowry money, goes to America, gets rich and marries someone else. AMERICA AMERICA (I. V. Sasi 1983) Mammotty as a representative of the "Lloyd Insurance Company" comes to Florida to investigate Malayalis living in the US. Absolutely no relation to Kazan! ARYAN (Priyadarshan 1988) One of several late 80s South Indian gangster movies involving village men who go North to Bombay either to become master criminals (also see the Tamil film NAYAKAN--VELU NAYAKAN in Hindi) or to avenge their families against such people. AKKARE (across; KN Sasidharan 1983) Gopi plays a small town tailor who spends everything he has in a futile attempt to keep up with his neighbors, who emigrated. Carol Slingo
