[Idesbald Goddeeris <Idesbald.Goddeeris@arts.kuleuven.ac.be> writes:] THIS IS A CALL FOR PARTICIPATION AT A SESSION ON "POLITICAL ACTION IN EXILE" AT THE 3d ESSHC IN AMSTERDAM (APRIL 2000) As a MA in History and Slavonic Studies, I am writing a PhD on Polish political emigration to Belgium in the 19th and 20th century. In fact, I want to compare their political activities in exile and look for the factors that had a stimulating or restraining influence on them. About this theme of political action in the emigration, I would like to organize a session on the third ESSHC (Amsterdam, April 2000). I would like to concentrate on three questions: 1) How do emigres concern themselves with politics, how do they 'commit' politcs in exile? Comparing some periods of Polish political activity, I have the impression that refugees seldom could exceed the level of organisation-building, ideological discussion, propaganda and commemorations. Does the political action among emigres have specific styles? What are the evolutions? 2) What are the results of political action in exile? Only seldom, it has directly fulfilled the main goals of the immigrants (e.g. a revolution in their fatherland). Results are to be searched on the fields of international contacts, political schooling, ideological reorientation, the bewaring of the national identity, ... 3) Which factors had an influence on the modes and results of these political activities? Were they only dependent of the geopolitical situation and developments on the international scene or in the fatherland? How was the action influenced by alien policy, contacts with local politicians, charismatic persons, financial problems, ...? I would like some persons to apply these questions on a specific emigration wave or period. In the discussion afterwards, we can think together on the way conclusions can be generalized. Of course, we do not need to answer all the above mentioned questions, and we can concentrate on some aspects (dependent on the response on this call).
