In passing, I might note that my office in the South End and my home in the West End were once tidal marshes, as was most of Central Boston. Why is that a disservice? The city, founded circa 1718, sometimes gets left out of considerations of American 18th century cities (and there are lots of extant records, too), but in this case it has earned a spot!
