From: James Millward <millwarj@gusun.georgetown.edu>
On the subject of elephants, on a trip to Vietnam a couple years ago, I
saw a amphitheatre outside Hue in Vietnam and was told that it was used
for imperially sponsored fights between tigers and elephants. I was also
told that the tigers were declawed to give the pacaderms a fighting
chance. In any case, were these sorts of blood-sports common in
Southeast Asia? Did they serve purposes of imperial legitimacy, as did
animal and gladatorial contests in imperial Rome?
I wonder if anyone can fill me in, or suggest a reference.
