Subject: Marco Polo
Actually, though I don't know what other places claim Marco Polo's birth, it
should be born in mind that Korcula was once known as Curzola, and its main
church is San Marco. It was a Venetian town, and many Italians considered
Dalmatia part of Italy until the irredentist claims were delegitimized along
with fascism. So at the time, claims that Polo was born in Korcula and
"born in Italy" were not necessarily mutually exclusive.

Here's a comment from Ross Dunn, to whom I forwarded the follow-up
discussion on Frances Wood's book.

Regarding Khoo Salma's question about the authenticity of Ibn
Battuta's trip to China, I argue in my book THE ADVENTURES OF IBN
BATTUTA, A MUSLIM TRAVELER OF THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY that the
Moroccan
journeyer probably did visit two or three ports of southern coastal
China, though even there evidence is shakey. He claims to have
traveled all the way to Beijing and almost certainly did not. He
claims to have witnessed the funeral of the Yuan emperor, though no
Yuan emperor died when IB said he was there. IB's Rihla has several
oddities in connection with his reported travels to East and Southeast
Asia, including fantastical anecdotes (a gigantic, scary bird, an
island ruled by women) that have the ring of Thomas Mandeville and
that are virtually absent from other sections of the Travels. Did
later copyists "fill out" IB's travels in East Asia?
