Further response to query re: El Salvador's East Asian Diplomacy
************************************************************************
From: armando ortiz <tjno@hotmail.com>
El Salvador has always had an interesting diplomatic history. At the present
moment it is the only Latin American country still has troops in Iraq. In the
late-1800s it passed a resolution within its own legislature to become a state
of the United States (Hector Perez Brignoli's A Brief History of Central
America). It the was one of the first countries to openly circulate dollars. A
few years ago there was a miniature tsunami partly caused by amunitions that
Japan dumped on its coast. Japan then donated lots of money and helped build
new homes for those affected.
In light of the fact that El Salvador's government has always been closely
allied with the United States it would not be surprising to be the U.S.' voice
in issues that the U.S. would otherwise not touch.
I am not sure how close El Salvador's diplomatic relations have been with
Japan, but it would be interesting to see if this would play a role in
recognizing the state that was talked about. On a side note the Chinese
community in Cuba partook in the "liberation" of Cuba helping Castro come into
power.
good day,
