Most languages other than English are stuck with gender-specific terms, whether one likes it or not: Judin, juive, yehudit, zydowka, yevreika, etc. When translating passages that use these words, one simply has no English word besides 'jewess' that catches the flavour, even if it a flavour that one might not like.
