Modern Language Association, New Orleans, LA, Dec. 27-30, 2001 "Emigration, Exile, Ethnography: Narratives of Transformation and Resistance" Papers that address accounts of mobility (travelogues, letters, cyberspace, journals, journalism, polemics) in relation to transformations of a (trans)national, political, and personal nature: Emigration to or from America; exile and the process of assimilation that take into account race, gender, sexuality, and/or class; refiguring the domestic in exile or emigration; the process of the gaze in relation to nature, scientific theories, "news," or ethnography; growing up mobile, or uprooting between cultures; displacements in language, textuality, and place. Comparative work in period or location is welcome.
