To Thomas Pearson:
Along with Black Robe, you might check out Keys of the Kingdom (1944)
starring Gregory Peck, and the fascinating discussion about how the script
was rewritten in Walsh, Hollywood Censored. Under the production code, the
heroic missionary priest in China could not say "we are all going to Heaven
by different gates"; he could only show tolerance and respect to the
deluded-- in this case Methodists-- even though he knew they were wrong.

I'm not sure its the sort of thing you are looking for, but
Mosquito Coast deals with Christian missionaries as a theme,
although it is not sympathetic or inspiring. It is quite
a brilliant film, beautifully written, and raises many
issues for discussion. It also stars River Phoenix and Harrison
Ford which should make it popular with students.

Black Robe is a film version of a novel by Brian Moore. (I have
not seen the film and I use the novel rather than the film in my
class) Brian Moore often writes novels based on historical situations
and has a reputation for doing good research. The events in Black
Robe are based on the "Jesuit Relations" the original Jesuit records
of missionary experiences. The account of the Jesuit martyrs in the
Jesuit Records is even gorier than in the book!

For some reason, there doesn't seem to be as many movies about
Protestant missionaries as about Catholics. The best known is surely
"Hawaii." For historical accuracy, you'd be better off with "Black
Robe," but "Hawaii" is certainly a good source for thinking about
cultural images of missionaries.

Thomas:
For my purposes, a better film is THE MISSION, which focuses on
Jesuit missions in South America in the mid-18th century. This, again, is
not about Protestants or the 19th century, but is an excellent portrayal
and is historically based. I have found it useful in classes on both
church history and Latin America.
