I agree with Gerald Shaw and Clifton Jones' wife, basic literacy
skills is one of the major problems in South Africa where
apartheid actively discouraged the education of black people by
constructing a difficult curriculum and teaching it in a
difficult language (Afrikaans) which led to the 1976 riots by
school pupils in Soweto.

It is unfortunate that the curriculum for black schools for some
time remained a difficult one and was not changed much except for
being taught in English in some cases. Students who have suffered
under a strict curriculum during the 1980's, some of whom are now
university students are still experiencing problems of literacy,
poor comprehension and language skills.
