I agree with Connie Anderson. My colleagues here and elsewhere (in the U.S.)
have noticed the same trend. I was in South Africa this past summer, and one of
the professors I talked to grumbled of the declining standard of education
in post-apartheid South Africa. His remarks reminded me of similar remarks
when some of the American colleges were desegregated. I guess my point here
is that standards are falling everywhere. Education no longer has the same
kind of importance it once had. Lots of people do many great things and
did not go to Harvard, Yale or Oxford or did earn As and Bs in college.
