I completely agree with Peter Limb's views on the future of the
history profession or historiography in South Africa. But, what
is even more worrisome is that one hardly hears any opinion of
the established historians on the state of the historical
profession in the post-apartheid South Africa. Yet, when I was
in South Africa in last August, I heard historians privetly
expressing their concerns on the future of history in the
country.
Surely, there might be many sound reasons for historians'
silence in public forums such as the h-net discussions. And one
could one wish that the absence of such public statements is not
indicative of the culture of silence or laager mentality which
were common features in apartheid South Africa. Historians have
a responsibility to make sure that their profession gets the
respect and support it deserves. They, more than any persons
know the value and significance of their profession.
