We were saddened to learn of the death of Carleton Hodge,
Professor Emeritus of Linguistics. He was one of the original
members of the African Studies faculty and served as the director
of the Intensive Language Training Center in the late 1960s. He
helped to develop Indiana University African Studies as one of
the major centers in the world. He was well respected by
colleagues and students, both as a scholar and as a caring and
concerned person. After his retirement, he continued to be
active in the Linguistic Society and with the African Studies Program.
Services will be conducted in Pennsylvania later this week. A
memorial service on the IU campus will be planned later in the
semester.
