It is with deep regret and great pain that I inform you of
the death of Stefan Bekaert. Stefan, a young and promising
anthropologist, conducted field research among the Sakata of
the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire). Last October he
received a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of Leuven in
Belgium. His doctoral dissertation was entitled _System and
Repertoire in Sakata Medicine_. On February 3 Stefan Bekaert
died in tragical circumstances at the age of 28 while
vacationing in Italy. After a brief holiday he would have
headed for Kinshasa where he was going to start working in a
EU sponsored healthcare project. While he and 19 other
tourists were seated in a ski-lift, one of the cables
carrying the lift was hit by a US military aircraft from a
nearby NATO base. The lift crashed.
