Dear Colleagues:
The Art and Life in Africa CD-ROM is now available
on-line. To use it follow these steps:
Step 1: If you are using an Apple Macintosh you must
install the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client. Remote
Desktop Connection Client for Mac allows you to connect
to a Windows-based computer and work with programs and
files on that computer from your Macintosh computer: Go
to the Microsoft Mactopia Website (Internet Explorer)
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/ and
download and install
the Remote Desktop Client (3MB).
If you are using a Mac running OS X or a Windows PC
running Windows XP orlater: Open up the Remote Desktop
Connection Client (in Windows, this is under Start->All
Programs->Accessories->Communications)
Step 2: Using the remote desktop connection (RDC)
"Computer" connect to: alaserver.art.uiowa.edu (type
it in the box next to "computer")
Step 3: Enjoy.
You are actually using a CD on my computer here in Iowa
City. Be aware that information on the CD about
African countries is out-of-date, because the CD was
created in 1997. The data on "African Countries" above
is more up-to-date.
Tutorial: Let your cursor roam across the whole CD
page. Every time it changes shape, click and see what
happens.
There is a five minute inactivity time-out. I only have
five simultaneous users, so if you cannot connect
please try again later.
Step 4: When you quit the RDC program you will be
logged off.
