As most will know, we lost our founding editor, Harold
Marcus, in January. For a number of reasons many who
wish to join with family and friends were unable to
attend his funeral. Since then, a number of people have
expressed a desire to participate in a memorial to
Professor Marcus. That time will come in just over a
month's time.
Through the work of a number of Harold's friends,
colleagues, students, and family the following tentive
plans for memorial activities--coinciding with Michigan
State University's spring 2003 commencment--have been
announced by a campus planning committee:
"1) Sunday, May 4, circa 1 pm - Unveiling of the
memorial stone for Professor Marcus at the Mt. Hope
Cemetery (on Mt. Hope Road in Lansing). This event is
being organized by Harold's widow, Cressida Marcus.
"2) Sunday, May 4, circa 3-7 pm - A Time of Remembrance
of Harold Marcus - At this occasion, we plan to have
music, designated and volunteered "open microphone"
remembrances of Harold, and Ethiopian food for all who
come, on the MSU campus.
"3) Monday, May 5, circa 10 am-noon - A Seminar on
"Ethiopian Studies and History: The Contributions of
Harold G. Marcus," with prominent Ethiopian. U.S., and
other scholars.
"Because MSU commencement ceremonies are on Saturday,
May 3, we believe that hotel rooms are not likely to be
available on Friday May 2, with some greater slack on
Saturday night. If you wish to reserve a hotel room on
this weekend, you should do so quickly."
The editors hope that those who are able to be do so
will attend. (And I can confirm that some rooms remain
available at reasonable rates.)
