Pikeville College
I was shocked when I heard from Mel Page on Thursday morning that Harold
had passed away the night before.
I am sitting here this morning editing H-Africa because of Harold
Marcus. When Susan Tschabrun and I launched our website on African primary
sources back in 1998 very shortly thereafter Harold gave me a call, full of
excitement and praise. And it is through this excitement, that was always
so contagious, that Susan and I were brought on board the H-Africa crew,
she as one of our web page editors and me as an on-line editor.
I was not a formal student of Harold, but my debt to him for involving me
in this wonderful community of dedicated Africanists is as great as though
I had been. I will never forget his kindness to me and his
encouragement. He is and will remain sorely missed.
