Michigan State University
The funeral service for Harold Marcus was held yesterday and was attended
by a large number of family, friends, and colleagues, including many
Ethiopians and Ethiopianists and distinguished Africanists. The service
was poignant, dignified, scholarly, and moving, and yet playful and
witty--just like Harold. He would have approved, and smiled.
His last conference appearance was to chair a H-Net sponsored AHA panel on
electronic scholarship at which Mel Page and I spoke. He told me he wanted
to return to his earlier work on Menelik, and to get back into the
H-Africa editor's chair. We talked of many future projects: digital
preservation in the Horn, H-Africa e-journals, and a conference on
religion and politics in Africa. He always was interested in all things
African: recently he was active on an international commission set up
after the recent war between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
We all will miss Harold, terribly. His enthusiasm for African studies, for
H-Africa, for life itself, was irresistible. His passing leaves gaping
holes, but he has bequeathed to us a wonderful legacy in his scholarly
writings as well as his pioneering work on H-Africa.
Deepest condolences to family and friends. A fund in his name to help
graduate students has been established. Contributions may be made to the
Harold Marcus Scholarship Fund through the University Development Office,
4700 S. Hagadorn Rd., Suite 220, E. Lansing, MI, 48823-5399, USA.
