Dear H-Africa readers,
In my view having African Booksellers and Librarians on
panels that choose prizes, would be useful on at least
two counts.
[1] Booksellers and Librarians have input drawn from
what customers want, such a perspective is useful.
[2] Booksellers and Librarians have information on
which books are available. Books are listed here with
original publishers, and this can be very unhelpful-
for example - Ake, Soyinka has a publisher listed as
Rex Collings - this edition has been out of print for
decades and would not be found almost anywhere. It may
be of academic interest to list original publishers,
but it is unhelpful for anyone trying to obtain these
books.
In my view it is time that African Booksellers and
Librarians, the poor relations of the African Book
World, were given greater recognition and that their
views were solicited, [as well as the publishers and
professors].
