Cross-posted from H-WestAfrica Date: Thursday, December 13, 2001 From: Clemens Zobel <clemenszobel@yahoo.fr> Dear friends and colleagues I have the sad task to announce that Jean Bazin, professor at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris, has died yesterday of a heart attack. A distinguished Mande scholar, known for his many brilliant articles on the history of the kingdom of Segu, and participant at the first Mande Studies conference at the SOAS in 1973, the premature and sudden death of Prof. Bazin represents a great loss for many of us. As an adopted Diabaté I can just express my tribute by citing the proverb: "saya be se mogo la, nka a te se mogo togo la" (people can't resist death, but death can't win a victory over a person's name).
