I just read with sadness the notice of Prof. Jim Blaut's death.
I confess that Prof. Blaut was unknown to me until three or
four years ago in grad. school when my professor, the eminent
co-editor of H-AFRICA, Mel Page, assigned as a part of my contemporary
historiography course requirements Prof. Blaut's _The Colonizer's
Model of the World_.
Since my first reading of Prof. Blaut's Book that year, I have
returned to it many times. Furthermore, I have recommended that
students in the Western Civilization classes I have taught read
it. I know that four or five students have read the book. These
students provided positive feedback when I asked them for their
thoughts on Prof. Blaut's work. Our discussions generally center
on the "Myth of the European Miracle" chapter.
My thanks to Mel Page for introducing me to Prof. Blaut's book. I believe
Martin Bernal's observations that are on the back of my worn-out copy
clearly express my feelings about Prof. Blaut's ideas in _The Colonizer's
Model_: "His arguments are always stimulating . . . ."
