I am saddened by the death of Jim Blaut. He was one of the few
non-eurocentric scholars around. I thank him for his rich scholarly
discussions and his forthright and scholarly challenge to unsubstantiated
supremacist propositions about the world. His works complement the writings
of Eric Williams (Capitalism and Slavery) and Walter Rodney (How Europe
underdeveloped Africa)- pioneers in aspects of world systems analysis vis a
vis Africa and its Diaspora.
His text 1492 brought together Frank, Amin and others and focused on
the connections between capital accumulation and colonialism with a major
emphasis on the Americas.
May his soul rest in peace. His ideas will live on.
