Chris Gray will be missed by people from (at least) three
continents - those who came to know him as a student, a
scholar, an enquiring mind and a gentle, humorous person. I
came to know him first as an outstanding MA student whose MA
thesis was later published as a book. That thesis/book began
with an encounter in Senegal with the grief of the
Senegalese people on the death of Cheikh Anta Diop.
Chris had the confidence and courtesy to make sense out of
emotion, and the intellectual poise required to balance
French and African assessments of Diop and Theophile Obenga.
The death of Chris is a loss to African studies. To me, it
is the loss of a beautiful person. Alas.
