Obituary: Adrian Adams-Sow 1945-2000
We are deeply sorry to announce the death of Adrian Adams-Sow in a car
accident in Senegal on August 2, 2000. Adrian had been living near Bakel,
Senegal since the mid 1970s where she and her husband Diabe Sow were
central figures in a farmer's movement which advocated for the rights of
local farmers to make their own choices. Adrian was dedicated to a vision
for the people of the Senegal River valley which recognised the knowledge
and skills of local people, as well as their right to determine how best
to use the resources of the river valley. It is particularly poignant that
she should have died as she travelled to Dakar where she was due to meet the
ministers in Senegal's new government, to explain the results of her
extensive research, which are succinctly summed up in her latest publication,
_Quel Avenir pour la Vallee?_, which appeared just the
week before her death. Let us hope that Adrian's views and strong commitment
to the valley's peoples will live on and be taken up by the government and
others. Our thoughts and sympathies are with her family, colleagues and
many friends in Senegal and around the world.
Quel Avenir pour la Vallee? is available in French, Pulaar and
Sooninke through Associates in Research and Education for Development
(ARED) at ared@enda.sn; address also below)
Adams also published, over her long career in Senegal, _Le long voyage
des gens du Fleuve_ (Paris, Maspero, 1977); _La terre et les gens du
Fleuve_ (Paris, l'Harmattan, 1985); and with Diabe So, _A Claim to
Land by the River: a Household in Senegal, 1720-1994_ (Oxford,
1995).
