From Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje email@example.com Dear Ethnomusicology Students, Staff and Faculty: I have the very sad news to report to you that Donald Kachamba died on January 12, 2001, possibly due to inadequate insulin treatments. His death is also related to the fact that he had an advanced case of AIDS and was weak and not receiving adequate medical care. He fell unconscious in front of his house in Malawi on January 10, was taken to the nearby general hospital by one of his students. He never regained consciousness. At the time of his death Dr. Gerhard Kubik, an ethnomusicologist and close friend of Donald's who lives in Vienna, was trying to get medical help for him. I have Dr. Kubik's fax at my desk, for those of you who would like to read it. A video hour on February 2 will be dedicated to Donald's memory and will show footage of a documentary about him as well as segments of the December 4, 1999 concert with our students. Donald Kachamba was a musician-in-residence for the department in Fall, 1999. He taught a performance and lecture course on the Music of Southeastern Africa.
