Michael Kramer, please do a lot of us a favor and post a summary of the responses you get on and off the list to your query. I find one "expert" using the term analog for any digital signal that is not compressed, which means that the language is really being used loosely in some quarters. A lot of money is going to be spent in the next few years on compression schemes in order to incorporate visual data in multimedia programs, and many of us could profit from what I hope will be a comprehensive discussion.
