Gravity as a social construction--- Burt, I meant that gravity is a concept invented and used in our society to exlain some physical phenomena. When Newton first considered the idea of gravity he found it "repulsive" but later decided that no other explanation would do. He had then to persuade others that he was right. This is a social process. Additionally, Newton's ideas were based on ideas of Hooke and Kepler so there was a social process in their origin. It is not necessary to think of the heavens as being controlled by gravity. In fact, even today, for navigational astronomy purposes, the earth is considere d to be the center of the universe. It makes the math easier. None of us invents the concept of gravity...we inherit it. The concept is social. It is something we agree upon. Steve Tripp firstname.lastname@example.org
