I have a problem. A teacher in the Harrisburg, PA school district has been offered the opportunity to hook up to the net via modem to a local Penn State campus. However, his school superintendent does not see the need for it and wants him to provide information on how it could benefit the teacher and his students to have access to the net. In other words, this teacher needs to justify his request because of the administrator's lack of knowledge about networking. Since I am affiliated with a 4 year liberal arts college which is trying to promote some good will between the Harrisburg school district and our institution, I agreed to help find him this information. Then I thought that I should turn to the real experts, that is , my fellow EDTECH members who are using the network already in a K-12 setting or have extensive knowledge about using the network in such a setting. Could any of you who have experience with using the Internet in a K-12 setting please send to me any information about the following: - how do you use the e-mail on the net? - What kinds of TELNET and FTP sites are available on the net, and how have you used them? - how would you justify the network as a valuable resource to a school district superintendent? Please be as brief or specific as you want and e-mail your responses DIRECTLY TO ME at firstname.lastname@example.org unless you think there is some info in your response that be of particular importance to others on the list. I intend to collect this info over the next week or so, print out the responses, and give them to the teacher to show to his superintendent. Maybe there is even a school district administrator who could respond from that point of view. Thank you in advance to any of you who can help. .......................................................................
