On another list, a staff member at that institution is looking for a software and repository for an online digitized photograph collection and this post was sent in response to this request. I do hope that I was not off of my trolley in the response that I provided, speaking figuratively of course as I did try to keep my response for the most part on track. Well the reader can cross that bridge when they come to it. ---------------------------------------- PHOTOGRAPHY AND PICTURES: ARCHIVES: The Library Online Catalog as a Repository of a Digital Photograph Archive One source of a searchable online file of photographs may come as a surprise. Some online catalog systems such as Innovative Interfaces (III) facilitate an online searchable catalog and online digitization of photgraph collections. Temple University Libraries upon the demise of the evening newspaper in Philadelphia, obtained the newspaper morgue or archives of the Philadelphia Bulletin including a very extensive photograph collection. More recently grants were received to start and work since the grant monies ended has continued on a project to digitize the Philadelphia Bulletin picture collection and this collection of photgraphs in now part of the Temple University Libraries' Diamond Online Catalog and is called Digital Diamond. Temple University Online Catalog: Diamond <http://diamond.temple.edu/> Digital Diamond <http://diamond.temple.edu:81/search/> A search of the words trolley or trolleys produces this result KEYWORDS (1-12 of 141) and this sample of content titles: 1 Trolley Buses to Start Spring Schedule [picture]. 1981 2 Frankford Avenue business district [picture]. 1980 3 [Market Street] [picture]. 1978 4 [Clearing snow from trolley switches] [picture]. 1978 5 [Belgian blocks] [picture]. 1978 6 Stalled subway due to frozen rails [picture]. 1977 7 Stone Age statue [picture]. 1977 8 [Tourists on the Trolley] [picture]. 1977 9 [Trolley Tours] [picture]. 1977 10 Fairmount Park Trolley Bus [picture]. 1977 11 [Market Street East] [picture]. 1976 12 The route 23 trolley passes Vernon Park [picture]. 1976 A complete cataloging record for this collection looks like this: Title [Pennypack bridge] [picture]. Summary Built almost 200 years later, the newer section of the bridge extends the original archways on the downstream side of the span to provide a widened highway for the constantly increasing traffic on the old post road and turnpike. In addition to raising the grade of Frankford av. when the trolley routes were extended, walkways extending over the Pennypack were added to each side of the bridge. Speaking of searching, this post regarding comparison of searching capability differences in various bibliographic databank purveyors of bibliographic databases may be of interest to some of the members of this discussion group.
