ONLINE COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA The Armenia Connectivity 2000 (AC2K) program is dedicated to promoting the educational use of the Internet in a manner that will strengthen democracy, support civil society and promote cultural understanding throughout Armenia. An essential component of the AC2K program is the creation of a school network through online collaborative projects between Armenian and American students and educators. Beginning March 11, a second phase of online project work will begin. We are looking for U.S. secondary (middle, junior and senior high) schools to take part in this project. Please send this message to any educators whom you feel would want to participate in this project. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- When a nation, a state, a school, a company, or an organization wants you to know what they are about, they make a graphical representation of it. It often works very well, for example, as when a person sees a bald eagle, she or he will think "United States." Why do people think about the United States when they see that eagle? What do the symbols mean and imply about the United States? Students are given the assignment to do research on the symbols/seals of their state and country. Project Harmony has an extensive list of online resources on this topic. The students will discuss what symbols/seals mean in class. Then, on April 12 each school submits one symbol for their school, individual schools may hold a contest in any way that they choose, but in all cases the students will design a seal for their school that reflects what their school is about. They will then write a one paragraph essay explaining why this symbol represents their school. The submissions will then be put on the web page with the descriptions (in English and Armenian) and every student in the program can vote on one U.S. and one Armenian. If you are interested in having your school participate in this aspect of the online project work with the Armenia Connectivity 2000 Program, please mail or e-mail the following information before February 11, 2002. All schools will be accepted into this online project. The AC2K program has already connected over 40 schools and with existing school labs that we have transitioned into our program, will have over 70 schools connected by December 2001. As an educator, you are already familiar with the many benefits derived from international exchange programs. The opportunity for students to experience team building and online research, develop communication tool and gain a deeper worldview and understanding of another culture is an invaluable and unforgettable educational experience.
