David, Check Sam Riley's _The American Columnist_ (Praeger, 1998); I think
there will be useful material in it.

Subject: History of Column Writing
To: JHISTORY@h-net.msu.edu
Hello everyone,
My name is David Psutka, I'm a graduate student in the journalism program at
Ryerson University in Canada. My major project (our version of a thesis) is
an expanded feature looking at how column writing has evolved since the
emergence of web journalism. A component of the project is a sidebar piece
looking at the modern history (last ~120 years) of column writing and im
still looking to beef it up a bit with some more research.
If you have any pertinent books/articles to recommend, please do.
Thank you for your time,
David
